So often Alzheimer’s disease is viewed as a rare condition that won’t affect us or anyone we love. However, Alzheimer’s disease is diagnosed in more than 3 million people a year. Tensions rise when we don’t understand what’s going on. With more knowledge Alzheimer’s disease becomes less daunting and easier to navigate. In the United States alone, every 65 seconds someone develops the disease. The Foundations of Alzheimer’s Support is here to help.

Research the disease.

Having an understanding will prevent the disease from being a suprise. Being aware of the issues can provide better care for the Alzheimer's patient. It will also prevent shock for loved ones on the effects of the disease on the brain.

Have an open conversation.

Talk to loved ones about the situation. With everyone knowing what’s going on it will prevent any uncomfortable feelings. When loved ones understand, communicating with the affected loved one can be easier for all.

Show understanding through hard time.

Showing understanding can prevent arguments between families. Everyone reacts differently to these issues therefore showing compassion is a must. Another important factor is showing understanding to the patient.

Find a mediator.

If tension is high with family members a mediator can step in. Mediators are available to help come to an agreed conclusion if one cannot be made without one. Mediators aren’t there to tell you what to do just helping.

Agree on the right kind of care.

When a big family is involved it is important to agree on the loved ones care. If the disease is caught soon enough the person may help decide the best fit for them. There are many different forms of care like at-home care by a loved one, a caretaker/nurse, or in a care home. This will prevent any disputes in the future and a calmer lifestyle for the patient.
